Vets off to winning start
The Veterans XI got off to the best possible start with a convincing win over Blackburn North United at Windermere.
The ‘Burners’ got off to a great start with the openers and their number 3 all getting into their 30s, before Mick Cleland (3/26) pegged them back in tandem with Brett Tucker (1/23). George ‘Booga’ Shaw (2/10) then turned up the heat at the end as Blackie North got to 7/138 on a very slow ground. New Skipper Garry Wilson got 1/25, while Gary Walsh and Chris Harris also did their bit. A good score by the Northerners, perhaps worth a few more, as the daisies were hard to cut through.
Brett Tucker (33) decided the best way was to go over the daisies, as he put on a quick-fire 50 partnership with Chris Harris (21), laying the perfect platform for the following batsmen. Mick Cleland continued his good afternoon with a composed 37, well supported by new ‘boy’ Brian ‘Boris’ King who was unbeaten on 32 to get the Gators home.
A very good first up win, with quality Vets batsmen like Mark Burridge and George Shaw not required as the Gators romped to 4/141 with several overs to spare.
Thanks again to the support crew, with the hospitality and magnificent afternoon tea appreciated by the visitors, as well as the Gators.
