Vets down to Knox Gardens
The Vets up and down season continued with a disappointing loss to high flying Knox Gardens. With ever reliable Chris Harris out injured, and George ‘Booga’ Shaw a late arrival due to a family commitment, the batting and bowling stocks looked a little underdone.
A couple of early wickets, of Cleland and Tucker, had the Gators on the back foot as Smith (34 not out), Mark Burridge (30) and Boris King (32) steadied the ship.
The final score was 7/116, which looked a little ‘under’ on the quick Knox Gardens ground. Making matters worse was a groin injury to Tommy Boersma during his innings, which threw another cloud over our bowling stocks.
Booga turned up just in time to open the bowling and he once again did the job, taking 2/7 off his six overs – a phenomenal return. One of his wickets was assisted by a stunning catch at second slip by Brett Tucker, diving down low and hanging on to a screamer. Tommy bowled on one leg to complete his set of overs and also claimed a wicket along the way (1/27 off six). That was about it for the bowling though, as Knox Gardens cruised to 4/123. Also having a trundle were Skipper Garry Wilson, who bowled tightly for 0/16 (off 6), Mick Cleland 0/20 (off4) and Garry Smart 033 (off 4).
Rob DeGraaf then had the honour of bowling the last over and he decided to enjoy it as long as possible, ‘bowling’ an 11 ball over and somehow taking a wicket to boot!
The Vets next game is the Christmas Party afternoon (December 7), against the Lysterfield Beavers at Windermere. Bring the family down, enjoy the day, enjoy the cricket – everyone’s a winner!
